Summary

The latest in the New York Times bestselling Sunny series brings Sunny into a sink-or-swim summer, where she needs to float her first job and dive into her first maybe-flirtation。

It's summer, and Sunny is BORED。 Most of her friends are out of town。 Her mom wants her to baby-sit way more than Sunny wants to baby-sit。 There's nothing good on TV。

The only place that's cool (in a not-boring sense) and cool (in a not-hot sense) is the community pool。 Sunny loves going there 。 。 。 and loves it even more when she's offered a job at the snack shack。 Soon she's flinging fries and serving soft ice-cream like a pro 。 。 。 with the assistance of the very sweet boy who works with her。

Sunny's mom isn't sure Sunny should be quite so independent。 But Sunny is definitely sure: Life is best when it's free swim。

Fun story and great art work。

For a kid who grew up in the 70s, I so hope this series never ends。 It is so fun to travel back in time with Sunny。 When reading this graphic novel series, it always amazes me what Jenny and Matthew Holm accurately remember from their childhoods。 From cranky moms to banana seats on bikes to intimidating high dives to rocket pops to Starsky and Hutch—it is an absolute time-traveling delight! And how great is it to spend time with her grandpa again! So hope for another in the series! It was so much fun to read about the summer that Sunny became a teenager。 The story and artwork compliment each other perfectly。 Too bad the pub date was delayed。 This is a summer read for sure。

My favorite installment of the series yet! I love the relationship between Sunny and her grandpa and I was glad to see him return。 Very cute overall, lots of great nods to the 70s and plenty of moments to look back and chuckle at my own teenage self。

My favorite thing about this fourth Sunny book is a visit from Gramps! His laid back personality is an effective foil for Sunny's ever suspicious mother。 It is summer and Sunny's friends are off doing things away from home。 Family time and babysitting little brother are BORING until they get invited to the local club pool。 Soon Sunny finds herself with a job opportunity and new friends that she sees every day。 If only she could be brave enough to jump off that high dive。 Loved all the late 70's My favorite thing about this fourth Sunny book is a visit from Gramps! During her summer vacations, Sunny's friends go out of town and she is left with nothing to do。 She eventually joins a pool snack bar, a job offered by her friend, Tony Scaccia。The plot is fun filled。 It explores the stages of love as two of Sunny's friends at pool fall in love with each other。 One also finds an old man as hard to manage as a teenager in this book。 During her summer vacations, Sunny's friends go out of town and she is left with nothing to do。 She eventually joins a pool snack bar, a job offered by her friend, Tony Scaccia。The plot is fun filled。 It explores the stages of love as two of Sunny's friends at pool fall in love with each other。 One also finds an old man as hard to manage as a teenager in this book。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 Not my favorite in the series but still a good, consistent addition。

I love all the Sunny books and was impressed that the fourth one is as good as the first。 Her experience at the pool reminded me of my own pool days and it was great having Gramps make an appearance。 (I borrowed it from my kiddo; he loves them all too。)

12yo Sunny made it through her first year of middle school, but now summer is in full swing and all her friends are busy or away。 No one will even be in town for her 13th birthday。 Luckily, on a visit with her mom's friend to the country club for a swim, Sunny sees Tony, a boy she knows from school, working the snack shack。 When the pool is cleared for "adult swim" and the shack gets super busy, Sunny helps out and Tony's dad offers her a summer job! I love this series so much! Sunny is adorable, I enjoy the nostalgia of the 70s - the bikes, the candy, the ice cream - even the country club - reminds me of my 12yo summers at the pool。 Sunny's mom is priceless (and exactly like my mom) so suspicious and worried that Tony may have nefarious plans, when he's just a really nice boy。 Full color illustrations and a great story。 Stands on its own, but your library absolutely needs the whole set。 cross posted to http://kissthebook。blogspot。com 。。。more

I always forget that Sunny books are set in the '70s because they are still so fun and relatable。 This one was very light-hearted but still, a fun read。 I love this series and so do my students! I loved this newest story about sunny!! She is convinced that this summer is going to be the worst because she has nothing to do except babysit for her baby brother and all of her friends are going away。 But when her friend invites her to the swim club a few times, she finds out one of the boys from school works at the snack stand and offers her a job! Things pick up and lots of fun ensues! Maybe she will even go on her first date?!? Highly recommend for all upper elementary and middle school li I loved this newest story about sunny!! Thanks to Edelweiss+ for provided an E ARC of this book!Sunny Makes a Splash is the 4th installment in the Sunny series。 It's summertime, Sunny's best friend is away, and she needs something to do。Her mom's suggestion is babysitting, but who wants to babysit their little brother? Not Sunny! One day at the pool, Sunny runs into one of her classmates, Tony。 He's overwhelmed with his snack shop duties, so Sunny jumps in to help。 And, so we can have a good storyline, Tony's dad gives Sunny a job help Thanks to Edelweiss+ for provided an E ARC of this book!Sunny Makes a Splash is the 4th installment in the Sunny series。 It's summertime, Sunny's best friend is away, and she needs something to do。Her mom's suggestion is babysitting, but who wants to babysit their little brother? Not Sunny! One day at the pool, Sunny runs into one of her classmates, Tony。 He's overwhelmed with his snack shop duties, so Sunny jumps in to help。 And, so we can have a good storyline, Tony's dad gives Sunny a job helping at the snack bar。Sunny and Tony make a great team, and the other employees (Dawn, Jay, and Pam) are nice to Sunny。Sunny's mom, however doesn't like the idea of Sunny hanging out with a boy。 Especially when he lets her borrow a t-shirt。Because, a Tweety Bird shirt is a totally inappropriate thing to let a girl borrow!Grandpa comes to visit, and quickly gets on mom's nerves。 He starts working at a thrift store, gets a maybe-sorta-girlfriend, and that's it for him。Around this time, Sunny uncovers a love triangle between the other three employees。 Pam has a crush on Jay, but Jay has a crush on Dawn。 The triangle resolves itself, and Dawn and Jay are basically a couple at the end of the book。Summer comes to a close, and the pool closes。 On the last day, Sunny overcomes her fear of the high dive and finally jumps off it。 When Sunny and Tony start school, they almost ignore each other, but Sunny realizes that she likes hanging out with him。 The book ends with her and Tony planning to fry candy bars。FRYING CANDY BARS?? YOU MONSTERS!!!!!!THE ENDPost-book thoughtsLike all of Jennifer L。 Holm's books, this one was great! Sunny is an interesting character, and she and Tony was super cute。 I love how the book wasn't super pushy about the 13-year-olds dating。 They're just good friends, and that's okay。 Not all middle-school heroines need boyfriends。The Pam/Jay/Dawn love triangle was resolved well。 Yeah, it was a bit of a cop out for Pam to leave Jay to Dawn, but the book could've gone over the top with cringey romance drama。Grandpa was a fun character! Sunny's mom was worrying over him and Sunny both, like he was a teenager too。 It gives me Fourteenth Goldfish vibes, which is a good vibe! That book is awesome。Overall, great book! There's nothing I would change, except maybe make the book a little longer。 Some of the story could've been expounded upon, but it's still fine。 An easy ready for middle school kids。I'm giving this book the highest score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 。。。more

E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusIt's summer just outside Philadelphia in 1978, and Sunny is faced with the tedium of watching her younger brother Teddy while her mother is spending the entire summer cooking and doing laundry and being super stressed, maybe because she's drinking too much Tab so she can fit into her double knit polyester pants and she's trying to give up smoking (that's all MY conjecture)。 There are a few times when the family is invited to go to the country club pool with friend E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusIt's summer just outside Philadelphia in 1978, and Sunny is faced with the tedium of watching her younger brother Teddy while her mother is spending the entire summer cooking and doing laundry and being super stressed, maybe because she's drinking too much Tab so she can fit into her double knit polyester pants and she's trying to give up smoking (that's all MY conjecture)。 There are a few times when the family is invited to go to the country club pool with friends, and when she is there, Sunny steps in to help a classmate, Tony, at the snack bar during the busy adult swim time。 His dad runs the pool, and offers to hire Sunny to help out。 Her mother (whom she interrupts during her programs while she's folding socks) reluctantly agrees but lays down a lot of rules。 These don't really affect Sunny, who has an awesome summer hanging out, eating the occasional deep fried ice cream treat and debating jumping off the high dive。 The older life guards include her and Tony in their after work parties, which means she gets to be out at NIGHT。 Her grandfather comes for a visit because the roof of his condo has fallen in, and his going out also irritates the mother, who accuses both of them of "acting like teenagers"。 At the end of the summer, Sunny heads off into 8th grade with a new friend (and potential romantic interest) to keep her company。 Strengths: Why are there not so many more books about tweens having exciting summers, hanging out with friends? Sunny had a rough time, with her older brother having drug problems in the first book, so she deserves sun and fun! Weaknesses: I cannot travel back to 1978 and have THIS summer instead of the one I did have! What I really think: Who am I kidding? I can't be objective about a book that almost perfectly depicts the family room in my parents' house。 And yes。 Bowls of ice cream every night while watching television。 Because we didn't serve dessert WITH dinner。 To this day, my father thinks this makes sense。 Definitely purchasing, and delighted to know that Ms。 Holm's is just one week after mine! 。。。more

Very solid fun! I like the parallels between Sunny and her Grandfather both gaining independence, though I do wish the mother was a bit more of a well-rounded character rather than a simple no machine。

I know for some (many) a book set in the late 1970s is historical fiction, but for me, this book is a fairly accurate representation of my summer life working at the swimming pool。 What good memories this brings back! I love the "field guide to the 70's" pages about the ice cream treats, movie theater candy, and TV shows of the 70's。 So fun to have Gramps show up unexpectedly and receive the same "you're such a teenager!" treatment from Sunny's mom when he stays out too late!Kids are going to lo I know for some (many) a book set in the late 1970s is historical fiction, but for me, this book is a fairly accurate representation of my summer life working at the swimming pool。 What good memories this brings back! This was a really fun summer story。 You don’t have to read the other books featuring Sunny to understand this book, although the others are great too。 The art is nice, not too detailed。 The text is good as is the story。 It’s funny, with a bit of romance thrown in。 (Read an ARC。)

I adore this MG graphic novel series, of which this is the fourth。 This one follows Sunny and her summer working at the snack bar of the pool。 She makes new friends and possibly develops a crush on a co-worker。 This one is definitely much lighter the the first books in this series (especially the first that has a heavy focus on her brother's drug addiction), but I enjoyed its fun, summer vibe。 I adore this MG graphic novel series, of which this is the fourth。 This one follows Sunny and her summer working at the snack bar of the pool。 She makes new friends and possibly develops a crush on a co-worker。 This one is definitely much lighter the the first books in this series (especially the first that has a heavy focus on her brother's drug addiction), but I enjoyed its fun, summer vibe。 。。。more
